Dedicated to Fancy Guppy breeding in the UK

BLA Conference and 2nd International Guppy Show Report 2007

I was not sure that based on the success of last year’s event that we would be able to improve on it this year, however I was wrong.

With a record number of entries in the Guppy Show; 110 pairs exhibited from the UK, Italy, Germany and Srilanka and 20 Wild fish entries from both the UK and Italy we easily surpassed last year’s entries.

There were a number of lectures on the Saturday that where very well attended covering a variety of topics from Fish House Construction given by Duncan Hughes Phillips to Guppy diseases given by Dr Peter Burgess of Aquarian (Details of this lecture can be found on the following site www.fancyguppies.uk). As well as 2 very entertaining lectures from Charlie Grimes.

We had over 60 people staying at least one night over the weekend.

The overall Grand Champion in the Guppy Show went to Jens Bergner of Germany with a magnificent pair of Red Delta Tails. (See below) All the German exhibits were brought over by Herman Magoschitz (18 in total) and I would like to thank him for doing this.

Herman is pictured here receiving the Grand Champion Shield on behalf of Jens.

We had 4 visitors from the Italian Guppy Association who brought a total of 20 exhibits; thank you to Diego Montanari for organising this and also for him and Simone Graziosi in helping out with the judging, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our other Guppy Show judges, Steve Elliott, Trevor Douglas and Trish Jones who all did an excellent job.

 Judgeing
For those who do not know the format of how a Guppy Show is judged.
All the exhibits are judged by every judge, the highest points and lowest points are then discarded with the remaining 3 sets of points added together and divided by 3 to give the fish an average score.
 For example
Judge 1 award’s 85 points; judge 2 award’s 86 points; judge 3 award’s 80 points; judge 4 award’s 83 points and judge 5 award’s 88 points.
Judge 3 and Judge 5 would have their results discarded as they awarded the lowest and highest points respectfully with the remaining 3 scores then added together 85+86+83 = 254 and then divided by 3 to give the fish its average mark of 84.66 points

I have also included some pictures here of the display that houses the exhibits for those who could not attend the event so that you can see just how the fish are displayed, a number of visitors commented on the way that the display looked and that it was better than their own aquatic retailers.

Photo shows a small section of the run of show tanks that stood along three
sides of the room, plus Malcolm in full swing with a sales pitch.

Photo's show sales stand designed to display fish for sale without the need for bag handling,
in the backgrounds can be see more show tanks plus part of the club displays.

The Auction as always proved to be very popular on the Sunday with once again standing room only.
The top price paid was for a pair of Japan Blue Bottom Swords that fetched an incredible £110.00,
the second highest price went for a pair of Galaxy Lyre Tails and these went for £69.00, many  of
the Guppy exhibits sold for over £20.00.
